Atharvasiras Upanishad ((サンスクリット:अथर्वसिरस् उपनिस्हद्)) or Atharvasirasopanishad, also known as Atharvashira, Atharvasira, and Śira Upanishad in Muktikā), is one of the 108 Upanishads, Hindu scriptures. It is among the 31 Upanishads associated with the Atharvaveda. It belongs to the Shaiva sect, which worships the god Rudra It is one of 14 Shaiva Upanishads. The Upanishad’s main focus is on Rudra who personifies Brahma and Vishnu, and signifies the essence of reality (truth). The gods are the embedded soul in the heart. ==Significance== In the Upanishad, the significance of the three lettered word Om (Aa, Uu and ma), though stated as with or without meaning, is present in the three sensory stages of wakefulness, sleep and dream.〔 The Upanishad belongs to the category of "later Upanishads" and is dated to the 5th century BC. It is sectarian in its emphasis and it is the first with such specific orientation. The Upanishad spells out the detail procedure for observing the Pashupati Vrata where the emphasis is on the anointment of the body by smearing with holy ashes before starting worship, as the qualities of the ashes are spelled out; the qualities are as personification of Agni (fire), Jal (water), Prithvi (earth), Akasha (ether), the Cit (mind), the eyes, and all other faculties. Performing this vow will result in freedom from karmic bondage which an individual is attached to, and acquisition of the same powers as Pashupati has; the Pashupati is Omnipresent in the time sense of the past events, present condition and future events. The devas prayed to Rudra as everything imperishable and eternal and then explained about the various names of Lord Rudra, their meaning and his greatness.〔
